Lesson 136

Sickness is a defense against the truth.

What this lesson is saying

Today’s idea is: “Sickness is a defense against the truth.” In ordinary English: Sickness can be used as a way not to know what you are. Keep ordinary care. Also ask.

The body is treated as the self, or as the enemy. This lesson says it is a communication device: a way to sit with someone, work, eat, rest. Care for it. Do not worship the picture. Do not punish it as a spiritual proof. Identity is not the glass.

You do not have to believe it first. You use the words on one real judgment — of someone, of yourself, of a situation — and then you take the next ordinary step.

This is not saying

This is not a dare to skip food, medicine, or sleep. Neglect is not the lesson. Using the body as the whole truth of you — or as something to escape — is the mix-up.

Why this can change a day

So much self-attack and so much attack on others runs through the body: aging as doom, a symptom as a verdict, their face as the problem. Remembering you are not the picture is how kindness to the body and kindness to them can happen in the same hour.

In your day

Same idea, three ordinary places — a relationship or encounter, the case against yourself, and a situation at work or at home. You do not need a special mood.

  1. With someone

You catch your own face in a glass and start a case — failing, unholy, not enough, this is just who I am.

    What to do

Say the words as written: “Sickness is a defense against the truth.” Same sentence about you that the lesson would have you say about them. Then the next decent action — not a new exhibit against yourself.

  2. Toward yourself

Fear of sitting still. Church and clinic both said listening inward is madness, or special.

    What to do

Say the words as written: “Sickness is a defense against the truth.” Note the fear. It is cultural. Sit anyway. Do not manufacture a voice. Kindness after you stand is a good test.

  3. At work, at home, or in a situation

A child, a dog, a home — something you love, and the tug when the lesson touches it.

    What to do

Say the words as written: “Sickness is a defense against the truth.” The tug is the teaching — an argumentative position in the mind, not a failure. They are unchanged. The glue was yours.

Two voices in the same mind

Hear which one is running. Then today’s idea, on a real person — or on you.

Unloving thought

This overlay is the Self. If I stop attacking me I will get worse. Honesty means staying on my case.

Jesus’s way

“Sickness is a defense against the truth.” Care for the vehicle. Do not worship the picture, and do not punish it. Identity is not the glass. Neglect is not the lesson.

Jesus’s commentary for Lesson 136

Tina reads the official workbook lesson first. Then she channels. The video is the source. The notes below are study notes of that sitting — not a transcript, and not A Year of Forgiveness.

This is the channeled portion — after Tina has read the lesson. Study notes of that sitting. Not a transcript.

  • Sickness is a defense against the truth.
  • The body used as proof you are not as God created you.
  • He is gentle and unsentimental: healing is a mind that does not need the symptom as a story.
  • See a practitioner if you need one.
  • Do not use the Course as malpractice.

How to sit today

Part I · Forgiveness

The idea is above. This is the one sitting this number asks — how often, how long, and the words. Not a second lesson.

How often
Two extended sittings, plus hourly remembrance, plus when temptation arises
How long
Fifteen minutes twice is the standard for this stretch of Part I
Through the day
A reminder on the hour — even a minute if that is all you have.
When shaken
When the day’s idea is the medicine, use it on the actual situation, not later in a chair.

How

  1. Read Lesson 136’s idea (and the prayer or specific form it gives). Spend the sitting in that idea, then give the rest of the day to remembering it.

Longer sitting

Two extended sittings — fifteen minutes twice is the standard for this stretch

  1. Today’s idea is: “Sickness is a defense against the truth.”
  2. Read the idea (and the prayer or specific form the official lesson gives). Spend the sitting in that idea.
  3. Say, slowly: “Sickness is a defense against the truth.”
  4. Let related thoughts come. Return to the idea when the mind wanders. Give the rest of the day to remembering it.

Short / hourly

A reminder on the hour — even a minute if that is all you have

  1. Say, slowly: “Sickness is a defense against the truth.”

When shaken

When the day’s idea is the medicine, use it on the actual situation, not later in a chair

  1. Say, slowly: “Sickness is a defense against the truth.”

This lesson is practice in polarizing with the person in front of you. Service to others is not a slogan. It is whether you treat them as the same being you are.
