Lesson 19

I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts.

What this lesson is saying

Today’s idea is: “I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts.” In ordinary English: How you think does not stay private either. Minds meet, even when no one speaks.

You are used to building a self from parents, work, the glass, the mood, the ranking of other people. This lesson says what you are was given, not achieved: as God created you, and so are they. That is not a compliment. It is a fact you practice when the other self-image is loud.

You do not have to believe it first. You use the words on one real judgment — of someone, of yourself, of a situation — and then you take the next ordinary step.

This is not saying

This is not a self-esteem project and not a claim that you are more powerful than God. You will not lose your personality. The sharp edges — the attack on you, the attack on them — can go.

Why this can change a day

If you are a private, failing self, then of course you must defend, compare, and prosecute. If you are as God created you, so is the one who irritated you, and the war has nothing left to stand on.

In your day

Same idea, three ordinary places — a relationship or encounter, the case against yourself, and a situation at work or at home. You do not need a special mood.

  1. With someone

You are stuck in one reading of a person and it feels like the only possible world.

    What to do

Say the words as written: “I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts.” Ask for another way. Do not manufacture a pretty overlay. Wait one breath. Then look at them again. Then speak.

  2. Toward yourself

You catch your own face in a glass and start a case — failing, unholy, not enough, this is just who I am.

    What to do

Say the words as written: “I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts.” Same sentence about you that the lesson would have you say about them. Then the next decent action — not a new exhibit against yourself.

  3. At work, at home, or in a situation

An old argument is playing while someone in front of you is actually speaking.

    What to do

Say the words as written: “I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts.” Name it: old film. Come back to the voice that is actually speaking. The rehearsal of attack is still attack.

Two voices in the same mind

Hear which one is running. Then today’s idea, on a real person — or on you.

Unloving thought

I can rehearse the case against them while they are not even here. It is only inside me. Attack in the mind doesn’t count.

Jesus’s way

You are not alone in the effects of your thoughts. The rehearsal is not private. Stop it. Bless them once in the mind.

  • “I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts.” Thoughts are causal in this teaching.
  • The ones you do not notice are still making the day.
  • He wants the hidden ingredients of the mind examined — not as self-hatred, as freedom.

How to sit today

Part I · Undoing

The idea is above. This is the one sitting this number asks — how often, how long, and the words. Not a second lesson.

How often
Three or four times
How long
About one minute

How

  1. Same joining idea, now with thoughts rather than seeing. Apply it to thoughts as they arise, and to the general fact of thinking.

Longer sitting

Three or four sittings — about one minute

  1. Today’s idea is: “I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts.”
  2. Now the joining is with thoughts, not with seeing.
  3. Say, slowly: “I am not alone in experiencing the effects of this thought about [name it].”
  4. Conclude:
  5. Say, slowly: “I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts.”

These scripts follow the workbook’s own method for this number — duration, frequency, and the sentences it asks you to use. They are a study paraphrase, not a replacement. Read the official lesson at acim.org and follow any wording it gives that is more specific than this card.

This lesson is practice in polarizing with the person in front of you. Service to others is not a slogan. It is whether you treat them as the same being you are.
