Lesson 199

I am not a body. I am free.

What this lesson is saying

“I am not a body. I am free.” Identity, not disgust. You have a body so you can sit with someone, work, eat, rest. You stop being the picture in the glass.

This stream refuses the student who uses the Course to leave their life. The body stays as communication. Care for it. Do not worship it. Do not punish it as a spiritual proof.

This is not saying

This is not a dare to skip food, medicine, or sleep. Neglect is not the lesson. Using the body as the whole truth of you — or as something to escape — is the mix-up.

Why this can change a day

So much self-attack and so much attack on others runs through the body: aging as doom, a symptom as a verdict, their face as the problem. Remembering you are not the picture is how kindness to the body and kindness to them can happen in the same hour.

In your day

Same idea, three ordinary places — a relationship or encounter, the case against yourself, and a situation at work or at home. You do not need a special mood.

  1. Toward yourself

A photo, a glance at a hand, a symptom taken as a verdict — this is just who I am.

    What to do

Say: I am not a body. I am free. See a practitioner if you need one. Then apply the idea to the story that this is who you are. Do both.

  2. With someone

You have reduced them to a body — attractive, aging, in the way, a problem in a chair.

    What to do

They are not that picture either. Same freedom. Then treat the person in front of you decently.

  3. In a situation

You want to skip the day and be spiritual instead.

    What to do

Stay. Eat. Help. Freedom is not leaving the body. It is refusing to let the body be the author of you.

Two voices in the same mind

Hear which one is running. Then today’s idea, on a real person — or on you.

Unloving thought

I am this body — its story, its score, its picture. Or: the body is the enemy I must leave to prove I am spiritual.

Jesus’s way

I am not a body. I am free. Identity, not disgust. The body stays as communication. You stop being it. You do not leave your life.

Jesus’s commentary for Lesson 199

Tina reads the official workbook lesson first. Then she channels. The video is the source. The notes below are study notes of that sitting — not a transcript, and not A Year of Forgiveness.

How to sit today

Part I · Peace

The idea is above. This is the one sitting this number asks — how often, how long, and the words. Not a second lesson.

How often
Include the idea in every practice period you take today
How long
Morning and evening longer sittings, plus the hourly habit already learned

How

  1. “I am not a body. I am free.” Make it part of every sitting — not as body-hatred, as identity.

Longer sitting

Morning and evening longer sittings, plus the hourly habit already learned

  1. Today’s idea is: “I am not a body. I am free.”
  2. Include the idea in every sitting you take today — not as body-hatred, as identity.
  3. Say, slowly: “I am not a body. I am free.”

Short / hourly

Hourly, and in every sitting

  1. Say, slowly: “I am not a body. I am free.”

These scripts follow the workbook’s own method for this number — duration, frequency, and the sentences it asks you to use. They are a study paraphrase, not a replacement. Read the official lesson at acim.org and follow any wording it gives that is more specific than this card.
