Workbook · Part I
Lesson 24
I do not perceive my own best interests.
What this lesson is saying
Today’s idea is: “I do not perceive my own best interests.” In ordinary English: You do not actually know what is good for you. The plan you are defending may be the problem.
Most of us treat seeing as the eyes reporting facts. This lesson says the mind is already writing a story on top of the report — mine, dangerous, ugly, important, “that’s just who they are.” Two people can look at the same face and have two different days. If you can take the story off for a minute, you are not stuck with yesterday’s version of them, or of you.
You do not have to believe it first. You use the words on one real judgment — of someone, of yourself, of a situation — and then you take the next ordinary step.
This is not saying
This is not telling you to go blind, or that the room is fake, or that nothing matters. The table is there. The person is there. What you added — the verdict — is what the lesson is after.
Why this can change a day
If the first look is already a judgment, then every conversation, every meeting, every glance in a glass is already a trial. Taking the story off is how a different hour becomes possible without anyone else changing first.
In your day
Same idea, three ordinary places — a relationship or encounter, the case against yourself, and a situation at work or at home. You do not need a special mood.
With someone
You received a kindness and want to store it as specialness, or you are counting what they owe.
What to do
Say the words as written: “I do not perceive my own best interests.” Give the thing you want: patience, a clean word, attention. Let it pass through. What you hoard, you lose sight of.
Toward yourself
Someone at work you have ranked as incompetent, in the way, or not trying.
What to do
Say the words as written: “I do not perceive my own best interests.” Do the useful part of the work. Drop the claim that their job is to complete you. A fact can still be said. A ranking cannot.
At work, at home, or in a situation
A murder show, a takedown, entertainment that tastes like winning.
What to do
Say the words as written: “I do not perceive my own best interests.” Notice the taste without self-loathing. Thoughts of attacking and of being attacked are the same thought. Look away. Then the next decent hour.
Two voices in the same mind
Hear which one is running. Then today’s idea, on a real person — or on you.
Unloving thought
This plan is in my best interest: winning, being right, getting even. Peace looks like loss.
Jesus’s way
You do not perceive your own best interests. The ego’s plan is more specialness. God’s is peace, which looks like loss to a mind trained on winning. Let ‘I do not know’ be intelligence.

How to sit today
Part I · Undoing
The idea is above. This is the one sitting this number asks — how often, how long, and the words. Not a second lesson.

- Five practice periods
- How long
- Two minutes of mind searching each
- Eyes
- Closed
How
- Repeat the idea, then with eyes closed search for unresolved situations you are currently concerned about.

This lesson is practice in polarizing with the person in front of you. Service to others is not a slogan. It is whether you treat them as the same being you are.
