Text · Chapter 11
God or the Ego
Original study notes. The book remains the book.
In plain words
Walk the sections in order. Open ordinary words when a paragraph is heavy. The book remains the book.
Walk through this chapter
Chapter 11. Each section of this chapter, in order. Ordinary words under a paragraph are the same teaching, said simply. The Text is the map. The day’s workbook lesson is still the walk. Official Text: acim.org.
God or the ego — not a truce
Every moment you choose. You cannot keep a private war and a relationship with Love. Peace is the condition of one teacher, not a bargain between two.
This is honesty, not fanaticism. One cherished attack and you will feel split, because you are.
The world as a witness to the teacher
The ego made a world that proves you are separate and in danger. The Holy Spirit uses the same world as a classroom. What you see reports who you hired.
If the day looks like a threat, ask which teacher got the morning.
The Choice, in another mouth
Ra’s fork — service to others or service to self — is this chapter without the biblical names. The workbook is 365 reps of this fork. You do not graduate by understanding it. You graduate by taking it, then taking it again when you renege.
Mild niceness is not yet the Choice. The next person is the exam.
How to sit this chapter
Name the attack you are keeping ‘just in this one case.’ That exception is the chapter. Hand it over. See what remains.
The truce is the stall. One teacher. Then the day can actually be used.
Words in this chapter
Ego
A belief, not a little person inside you. The ego is the thought that you are a private self who must win, defend, and explain. You cannot fight it. You stop using it as your advisor. Spiritual specialness is still the ego, in better clothes.
Service-to-others / service-to-self
Ra’s names for the two directions a mind can choose: toward the other as the Creator, or toward control. Third density’s only exam. Service-to-others is not martyrdom and not people-pleasing — a working majority of love (roughly 51%). Service-to-self is steep (roughly 95% control) and allowed by free will; the Course simply calls it the ego and does not recommend it. Mixed is a retake.
Peace
An available perception, not the prize at the end of fixing the world. Lesson 34: you could see peace instead of this — this being the situation still in front of you. Wanting the peace of God more than the substitutes is the whole later curriculum.
God
Not a magnified human with moods. God is, and you are His creation. The Course’s God does not condemn, bargain, or require suffering. Fear of God is the last obstacle because the ego’s god is a projection of guilt. “God goes with me” is identity, not a mascot.
Spalding
The year's work, in Spalding, is this binary lived daily. Not as fanaticism — as honesty about what you are choosing.
Open streamRa
The Choice of third density, stated without density jargon. Service-to-others or service-to-self. God or the ego. Same fork.
