Walk through this chapter
Chapter 4. Each section of this chapter, in order. Ordinary words under a paragraph are the same teaching, said simply. The Text is the map. The day’s workbook lesson is still the walk. Official Text: acim.org.
The ego is a belief, not a being
If the ego were a little person inside you, you would have to kill it, and killing is its game. It is a habit of attention: listen for danger, collect allies, stay special. It needs you to believe it is you.
You cannot fight a habit as if it were a demon. You stop hiring it as advisor.
The ego’s need for allies
The ego recruits — people, ideas, even spiritual systems — so it will not be alone in its story. Being right is oxygen. Specialness is the club.
If a teaching needs you to be rarer than the person nearest you, the ego has a new robe.
The Holy Spirit’s classroom
You do not empty the mind and vanish. You change teachers. The same day, the same people, a different use. Being is what you are. Doing is what the ego substitutes so you never rest.
When you feel you must manage, prove, or recruit, you are in this chapter. Leave the job. The classroom remains.
You cannot fight the ego
War in your own head is still war. The Course’s practical psychology is here: withdraw belief, do not attack the thought. A different Teacher can use the same hour.
Notice the commentary. Do not argue with it. Ask for another way of seeing. Then do the next kind thing.
Words in this chapter
Ego
A belief, not a little person inside you. The ego is the thought that you are a private self who must win, defend, and explain. You cannot fight it. You stop using it as your advisor. Spiritual specialness is still the ego, in better clothes.
Holy Spirit
The remaining communication link — the part of your mind that never believed the separation. Not a ghost in the room. The inner Teacher who translates the world you made into a classroom. When a lesson says “listen,” this is Who is being listened for. Stillness is the method; manufactured voices are the ego auditioning.
Fear
A call for love, dressed as a prophecy. You are never afraid for the reason you think. Fear of God is fear of love, because love would end the private self. “There is nothing to fear” is frequent and short on purpose — fear wants a long story.
Spalding
The karma of chaos, in Tina's map, is the ego's loop: create disorder, then offer to manage it. Leave the job.

The mind complex can identify with distortion. That identification is not a being. It is a habit of attention.
