Workbook · Part I

Lesson 4

These thoughts do not mean anything. They are like the things I see in this room [on this street, from this window, in this place].

What this lesson is saying

Until now the glance was outward. Today the same honesty turns inward. “These thoughts do not mean anything. They are like the things I see in this room.”

A thought is not you, and it is not a secret report from God. Judgment, planning, ranking someone while you wait — they show up like furniture. Watch one. Name it by its central person or event. Then: this thought about them does not mean anything.

This is not saying

This is not a thought-purge and not a command to stop thinking. Include thoughts you call good. The “holy” commentary and the mean one get the same sentence. You will not lose your personality.

Why this can change a day

If the stream in the head is allowed to be you, then every relationship is already being run by a commentator no one else can see. Letting a thought pass is how you stop building an enemy, or a failing self, out of a passing line.

In your day

Same idea, three ordinary places — a relationship or encounter, the case against yourself, and a situation at work or at home. You do not need a special mood.

  1. Toward yourself

A stream of thoughts runs — I am failing, I should have, this is just who I am.

    What to do

Pick one. Watch it the way you watched a chair. These thoughts do not mean anything. Let that one pass. Do not build a self from it.

  2. With someone

A ranking of them starts while they talk, or while you wait — the problem, the fool, the one who always.

    What to do

Name it: this thought about [name] does not mean anything. Then listen to the person actually speaking.

  3. In the day

A plan or a judgment presents itself as a fact.

    What to do

Name it: a thought I made. Then take the next ordinary step. If a harmful thought is obvious between sittings, tag it. That extra is not a substitute for the short watches.

Two voices in the same mind

Hear which one is running. Then today’s idea, on a real person — or on you.

Unloving thought

The commentary is me — the judgment, the plan, the ranking while I wait. It is a report. I have to follow it or I disappear.

Jesus’s way

These thoughts do not mean anything. They are like furniture: assigned meaning, not revelation. The stream in the head is not you, and it is not God. You will not lose your personality.

Jesus’s commentary for Lesson 4

Tina reads the official workbook lesson first. Then she channels. The video is the source. The notes below are study notes of that sitting — not a transcript, and not A Year of Forgiveness.

After the reading

In the video · Jesus speaking

This is the channeled portion — after Tina has read the lesson. Study notes of that sitting. Not a transcript.

  • Thoughts are like the furniture: assigned meaning, not revelation.
  • The stream of commentary in the head is not you, and it is not God.
  • Let a thought pass as you let a chair be a chair without a story.

How to sit today

Part I · Undoing

The idea is above. This is the one sitting this number asks — how often, how long, and the words. Not a second lesson.

How often
Do not repeat more than three or four times today
How long
About one minute of mind searching — not more
When shaken
You may also use the idea on a particular thought you recognize as harmful. That is extra, not a substitute for the random sittings.
Eyes
Closed for the mind search

How

  1. Do not begin with the idea. First notice the thoughts crossing your mind for about a minute, then apply the idea to them.
  2. Include “good” thoughts as well as “bad.” Name each by the central figure or event: “This thought about ___ does not mean anything.”

Longer sitting

Mind searching — about one minute, three or four times (do not do more)

  1. Today’s idea is: “These thoughts do not mean anything. They are like the things I see in this room [on this street, from this window, in this place].”
  2. Eyes closed. Do not begin with the idea. First watch the thoughts that cross the mind for about a minute.
  3. Include thoughts you call good and thoughts you call bad. Name each by its central figure or event.
  4. Say, slowly: “This thought about [name the person or event] does not mean anything. It is like the things I see in this room.”
  5. Stop at a minute. You are too new at this to become preoccupied.

When shaken

Extra — a thought you recognize as harmful

  1. This is extra, not a substitute for the random sittings.
  2. Say, slowly: “This thought about [name it] does not mean anything.”

You are too new at this to become preoccupied. Stop at a minute.

These scripts follow the workbook’s own method for this number — duration, frequency, and the sentences it asks you to use. They are a study paraphrase, not a replacement. Read the official lesson at acim.org and follow any wording it gives that is more specific than this card.

Love/light is the stuff of the octave. Seeing with God is not metaphor — it is a shift toward that spectrum. Meditation (session 10) is the daily tool.
