Workbook · Part I
Lesson 8
My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.
What this lesson is saying
“My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.” The commentary is reruns. You are replaying yesterday while someone in front of you is actually speaking, or while a task is actually here.
Preoccupation with past thought is how you miss the only time anything can change: now. This is not hatred of memory. It is clearing the lens. The replay of attack is still attack.
This is not saying
This is not emptying the mind forever. You are catching it at the rerun and coming back.
Why this can change a day
A relationship cannot be new if the mind is busy with the last fight. Work cannot be honest if the mind is busy with the last failure. Coming back is the whole miracle at this stage.
In your day
Same idea, three ordinary places — a relationship or encounter, the case against yourself, and a situation at work or at home. You do not need a special mood.
With someone
An old argument is playing while they are talking.
What to do
Name it: old film. Say: my mind is preoccupied with past thoughts. Come back to the voice that is actually speaking.
At work or at a task
You are rehearsing a meeting that already happened, or a remark you wish you had made.
What to do
The rehearsal is still the past. Come back to the task in your hands.
Toward yourself
A loop about who you were — the mistake, the shame, the highlight.
What to do
Same. Let the loop be a past thought. It does not get to author this hour.
Two voices in the same mind
Hear which one is running. Then today’s idea, on a real person — or on you.
Unloving thought
I can replay yesterday while they are talking. That is thinking. The film keeps me ready for the next attack.
Jesus’s way
My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts. The mind busy with yesterday cannot receive now. This is not memory-hatred. It is clearing the lens.

Jesus’s commentary for Lesson 8
Tina reads the official workbook lesson first. Then she channels. The video is the source. The notes below are study notes of that sitting — not a transcript, and not A Year of Forgiveness.
After the reading
In the video · Jesus speaking
This is the channeled portion — after Tina has read the lesson. Study notes of that sitting. Not a transcript.
- Preoccupation with past thoughts is how the projector stays on.
- He is practical: the mind busy with yesterday cannot receive now.
- This is not memory-hatred.
- It is clearing the lens.
How to sit today
Part I · Undoing
The idea is above. This is the one sitting this number asks — how often, how long, and the words. Not a second lesson.
- How often
- Four or five times; three or four if it irritates you
- How long
- The usual minute or so of mind searching
- Eyes
- Closed — you are looking at thoughts, not at the room
How
- Eyes closed. With as little investment as possible, note the thoughts you find. Name each by its central figure or theme.
- Begin: “I seem to be thinking about ___.” End the search with today’s idea.
- If irritation arises, include the irritation in the search.
Longer sitting
Four or five sittings (three or four if it irritates you) — about one minute
- Today’s idea is: “My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.”
- Eyes closed. With as little investment as possible, note the thoughts you find. Name each by its central figure or theme.
- Say, slowly: “I seem to be thinking about [name it].”
- End the search with today’s idea:
- Say, slowly: “My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.”
- If irritation arises, include the irritation in the search.
These scripts follow the workbook’s own method for this number — duration, frequency, and the sentences it asks you to use. They are a study paraphrase, not a replacement. Read the official lesson at acim.org and follow any wording it gives that is more specific than this card.

This lesson is practice in polarizing with the person in front of you. Service to others is not a slogan. It is whether you treat them as the same being you are.
