Fifty miracle principles

Original study notes for each statement. Not a reprint. The book remains the book.

In plain words

A miracle, in this book, is a change of mind from attack to joining. It comes from love. It is natural. Small and large are the same size. The rest of the fifty are how that one fact works in time, in the body, in fear, and in the plan called Atonement.
An open book and a candle on a wooden table in a dark chapel.

In plain words

Heavy language, one job: train the mind to stop attacking. The notes on each chapter exist so you can actually enter the book.

The Text is the theory the workbook trains. Do not skip it forever; do not hide in it either.

A miracle is a change of mind

  1. See the grievance

You have hired a person as proof.

  2. Drop it

A little willingness. Not a feeling you fake.

  3. The shift

That is the miracle. Form may follow.

  4. Give it on

What you offer them is what you keep.

No order of difficulty. The small irritation counts the same as the life-story. Extension, not display.

Time as a classroom

The old use

The archive as a weapon

Every similar face is last time. The future stays identical.

The holy instant

This look, unused

You do not clock it. You offer it. Time continues for the body. The need for time as a weapon lessens.

The past is not a chain. It is a file you keep opening. The holy instant is not using it.

Chapter 1 opens with fifty statements about what a miracle is. They are the Course’s physics. The notes below are original study notes — plain words and a deeper meaning for each — not a copy of the book. Read the fifty in the Text. Use these when the language is heavy.

Chapter 1 · Atonement · Lesson 78

  1. 1. No order of difficulty

    In plain words

A small irritation and a lifelong hurt use the same miracle. Love does not rank problems. If you save the ‘big’ ones for later, you have already decided some errors are realer than others.

    Deeper meaning

This is the first law of the whole Course. Difficulty is a belief about size, not a fact about love. Lesson 78 will say the same: let miracles replace all grievances — not the ones you have already decided are eligible. If a small irritation and a betrayal needed two different Gods, God would be split. They do not. Practice on the small one today so the mind learns the mechanism before it meets the large one.

  2. 2. The Source matters, not the show

    In plain words

The miracle as an event is not the point. Where it comes from is the point — Love, beyond scoring. Collecting wonders is still the ego.

    Deeper meaning

If you chase effects — a healed body, a changed person, a story to tell — you have made the miracle into a spectacle (see 10). The Source is God. Evaluation is the ego’s habit: was it big enough, did it work, did they notice. Drop the scorecard. A quiet change of mind that no one saw is still the thing. Ra’s harvest metric is the same: polarity, not display.

  3. 3. Natural as love

    In plain words

Miracles happen on their own when you love. The real miracle is the love, not the effect. Anything that comes from love counts.

    Deeper meaning

You have been treating miracles as rare. This principle says they are what love does, the way fire gives heat. When they do not occur, something has gone wrong (principle 6) — not in God, in the mind that is attacking instead of loving. You do not manufacture love and then add a miracle. You stop attacking. Love expresses. That expression is the miracle.

  4. 4. They mean life — and you will be told

    In plain words

Every miracle is on the side of life. God gives life. The Voice will tell you what you need, specifically — not as a vague mood.

    Deeper meaning

Life here is not merely the heartbeat. It is what God creates, which cannot die. A miracle sides with that, against the ego’s attraction to endings (chapter 19). ‘You will be told’ is guidance: the Holy Spirit is specific in a day, not a cosmic fog. Stillness is the method. Manufactured voices are the ego auditioning. Take the next kind step as the answer if silence holds.

  5. 5. A habit, not a stunt you pick

    In plain words

Miracles should become involuntary — a habit of mind. If you sit down to choose a impressive one, you can be misguided.

    Deeper meaning

Conscious selection is the ego wanting to be the author of grace. The workbook trains the opposite: apply the idea to whatever is here, indiscriminately. A habit means you no longer decide who deserves a change of mind. That is why early lessons say not to exclude, and not to make a ritual of including everything. When the mind loves as a habit, miracles are as ordinary as breathing. Planning one for Saturday is already a little off.

  6. 6. When they do not occur, something is wrong

    In plain words

Miracles are the natural state. Their absence is the clue. The wrongness is in the mind that is at war, not in a stingy God.

    Deeper meaning

This is diagnostic, not a scold. If the day has no joining in it, look for attack, grievance, or the wish to be special. God has not gone on strike. You have hired the other teacher. The correction is not to force a miracle. It is to notice the war and set it down. Then 3 and 6 agree: love expresses; when it does not, the mind is not in love.

  7. 7. Everyone’s right — after a clearing

    In plain words

A miracle is not a talent for saints. It is yours. What is needed first is purification: a mind willing to be cleaned of attack, not a moral report card.

    Deeper meaning

Purification in this book is not punishment and not dietary holiness. It is the willingness to have the grievance washed. You cannot be a channel of joining while you are using the mind to condemn. The right is already given. The block is the wish to keep one attack. Little willingness is the purification that is asked. Not perfection.

  8. 8. They supply a lack

    In plain words

Healing here means someone who, for a moment, remembers more, offers that remembering to someone who, for a moment, remembers less. Both are the same being. The ‘more’ is temporary.

    Deeper meaning

This is not spiritual rank. Temporary more, temporary less — a teacher of God is anyone who has accepted Atonement for a moment and extends it. Tomorrow the roles may switch. If you freeze ‘I have more’ into an identity, you are the unhealed healer (chapter 9). Supplying a lack does not mean they are empty of God. It means they have forgotten. You remember for them until they remember. That is all.

  9. 9. An exchange that increases love

    In plain words

In the world, if I give you my apple I have none. A miracle reverses that. Both people end with more love. Giving is how you keep it.

    Deeper meaning

Physical laws of scarcity do not apply to love. Lesson 108: to give and receive are one. Chapter 7: extension versus projection. If a kindness made you poorer, it was not this. If it made you superior, it was not this. The exchange is maximal — love does not give a little. That is why a withheld miracle costs you. You refused the increase.

  10. 10. Not a spectacle to make people believe

    In plain words

Using wonders to impress, convert, or prove the Course is a misunderstanding. Belief that depends on a show will demand another show.

    Deeper meaning

Magic wants witnesses. The miracle wants joining. Jesus refuses the ego’s request for signs as the basis of faith. If your spirituality needs a story that would look good in a feed, you are in 10. A change of mind in an ordinary hour is the purpose. Ra is as plain: the Confederation does not harvest by marvels. Polarize. Then, maybe, form rearranges. Form is not the proof.

  11. 11. Prayer receives; miracles express

    In plain words

Prayer is how the created talks with the Creator — love coming in. A miracle is love going out. They are one motion in two directions.

    Deeper meaning

Prayer in this book is not bargaining. It is communication: you listen as much as you speak. Through that listening, love is received. Through the miracle, it is given. If you pray and will not forgive, you have closed the outgoing door, and the incoming one jams. If you ‘do miracles’ and will not pray, you are performing. Both doors are one hallway.

  12. 12. They are thoughts

    In plain words

A miracle is a thought, not a trick with objects. Thoughts at the body-level make a private world. Thoughts at the spirit-level create. One manufactures; the other extends what God created.

    Deeper meaning

Projection makes perception: bodily-level thought builds the world you then suffer. Spirit-level thought does not make a second world. It creates as God creates — which, in this book, means it extends love. You already think. The question is which level you are thinking from. Lesson 16: no thought is idle. This principle is why the workbook trains thought first, not ritual.

  13. 13. They undo the past in the present

    In plain words

A miracle is a beginning and an ending at once. It seems to go backward (it undoes what you thought happened) and it actually frees the future. Time is rearranged.

    Deeper meaning

The ego’s time is: past guilt, present defense, future fear. A miracle collapses that line. In this instant you do not use the past as a weapon, so the future is not required to repeat it. That is rebirth — not a drama of starting over, an affirmation that what you are was never what the past said. Learning through pain becomes unnecessary. That is how miracles save time (47–48).

  14. 14. Witnesses to truth — or they become magic

    In plain words

A miracle is convincing because it comes from conviction — a mind that knows what it is. Without that, the same gesture deteriorates into magic: mind used without love, which can only destroy.

    Deeper meaning

Magic, in this book, is the uncreative use of mind: trying to make the dream obey you. It can look like a miracle from outside. The difference is Source and purpose. Conviction is not stubbornness. It is resting in what you are. If you use ‘miracle work’ to get, to win, or to be special, you have slipped into magic. White magic, in Ra, is dedicated to the One. Same fork.

  15. 15. Give the day to them

    In plain words

Each day is for miracles. Time exists so you can learn to use it well. When the learning is done, time is done. Time is a classroom, not a home.

    Deeper meaning

This is why there is a workbook of 365 days. The purpose of a day is not to survive it. It is to use it to join. When time is used that way, it becomes kind (chapter 13). When it is used to prove the past, it is cruel. You do not have to finish time. You have to use today’s interval. Lesson 365 is this principle as a prayer: this instant, given.

  16. 16. As blessed to give as to receive

    In plain words

A miracle is a teaching device with one lesson: giving and receiving are the same. The giver gets stronger. The receiver is supplied. Both are blessed in one act.

    Deeper meaning

The world taught you that giving depletes. This principle is the correction of that law. Strength is not a pie. If you feel emptied by kindness, look for the bargain you attached to it. True giving is extension (chapter 7). The teaching is simultaneous — you do not give now and get paid later. The increase is the act.

  17. 17. They go beyond the body

    In plain words

A miracle is a sudden shift away from body-identification. That is why it heals. It does not worship flesh and it does not attack it. It looks from spirit.

    Deeper meaning

Healing in this book is a change of level: you stop taking the body as the altar of truth (20). ‘Invisibility’ here is not a parlor trick. It is the mind no longer locating itself in flesh as identity. Care for the vehicle remains courtesy. Identity is spirit. Sickness, in chapter 10 and principle 23, comes from confusing those levels. Rearrange the levels and the body can follow. It may not. The healing was still of the mind.

  18. 18. A service — loving the other as yourself

    In plain words

A miracle is the most you can actually do for someone. You see their worth and yours at the same time. That is the whole of ‘love your neighbor as yourself’ in this book.

    Deeper meaning

Service here is not a career in helping. It is a way of seeing that joins. If you serve them as a superior, you have split worth. If you serve to be needed, you have made lack. Simultaneous recognition: one Self, two faces. Maximal service is that seeing, offered. The rest of help — meals, medicine, work — can ride on it. Without it, help becomes control.

  19. 19. They make minds one in God

    In plain words

Miracles join minds. They need cooperation because everyone God created is part of the one created being. They follow eternity’s law, not the clock’s.

    Deeper meaning

The Sonship is not a boys’ club. It is the Course’s word for the whole of what God created — you, them, the one Self. A miracle reflects that fact in time. Cooperation means: you cannot force joining on a mind that wants the war. You offer. Free will remains. Eternity’s law is: what is true of one is true of all. Time’s law is: someone must lose. The miracle does not obey time’s law (9, 25).

  20. 20. Spirit is the altar, not the body

    In plain words

Miracles wake you up to this: truth’s altar is spirit. The body is not. That recognition is what gives a miracle its healing power.

    Deeper meaning

You have been praying to the body — asking it to tell you how you are, whether you are safe, whether you are good. This principle moves the altar. Root (red) courtesy still feeds and rests the vehicle (Ra). Worship is the error. Once the altar is spirit, the body can be used to communicate (chapter 7) instead of to prove guilt. Healing power is that shift, not a technique laid on flesh.

  21. 21. Natural signs of forgiveness

    In plain words

A miracle is what forgiveness looks like when it moves. You accept God’s forgiveness by giving it. You cannot keep a private pardon.

    Deeper meaning

Forgiveness in this book is not noble pardon of a real sin. It is the recognition that nothing real was threatened. A miracle is that recognition, extended. Accepting God’s forgiveness is not a feeling of being let off. It is extending the same release to someone you wanted to keep guilty. Lesson 46, 62, 121, 139 live here. The chain of that extending is the Atonement (25).

  22. 22. Fear, because you think darkness can hide

    In plain words

Miracles feel scary only because you think what you cannot see with the body’s eyes is not there. That belief denies spiritual sight — and then a miracle looks like a threat to the world you made.

    Deeper meaning

The ego’s law: if I cannot see it, it does not exist. So spirit is ‘nothing,’ and the body is ‘everything.’ A miracle shows you the opposite, and the ego calls that danger. Fear around a change of mind is not proof the change is wrong. It is proof you still believe darkness hides you from God. It does not. Light does not hunt you. You have been hiding. Walk toward the fear of God (chapter 19, obstacle four). It is the fear of your own reality.

  23. 23. They put the levels back in order

    In plain words

A miracle rearranges how you see, so mind, body, and spirit are in true order. Sickness comes from mixing those levels — treating the body as cause, the mind as effect.

    Deeper meaning

Level confusion is the Course’s diagnosis of a huge amount of pain: you think the world caused your mind, or that the body authors you. Cause is in the mind. The body is effect (or, in Ra, a vehicle the mind uses). Healing is putting cause back where it is. This is not a dare to skip a doctor. It is a dare not to let a symptom write your metaphysics. True perspective: spirit is what you are, mind is the split or the joining, body is the means.

  24. 24. You made sickness and death — you can unmake the belief

    In plain words

This principle is easy to misuse. It does not mean you are guilty of every illness. It means the mind that dreamed a mortal self can notice the dream. You are a miracle. Only what light created is real. The rest is a nightmare you do not have to keep.

    Deeper meaning

Read this with chapter 10 and with ordinary care. ‘You made sickness’ is about the separated mind’s authorship of a frail identity — not a weapon to use on anyone who is ill, including you. ‘Raise the dead’ is the Course’s claim that death is not the law of what you are. Grieve forms. Do not let the ego use an ending as its last proof. You are able to create as God creates: extend love. Nightmare is a strong word for the world of attack. It is the book’s word. You wake by changing the dreamer (chapter 27), not by blaming the sleeper.

  25. 25. A chain of forgiveness — that is the Atonement

    In plain words

Miracles link. When the chain is complete, that is the Atonement: the whole correction. The plan works in every kind of time — not only this hour, and not only after death.

    Deeper meaning

One dropped grievance is already a link. You do not see the rest of the chain. Principle 45 will say a miracle is never lost and may touch people you will not meet. Atonement is that chain, finished in God, unfolding in time. It works ‘all the time and in all the dimensions of time’ — the Course’s way of saying the correction is not trapped in your clock. Accept it for yourself (chapter 9, Lesson 139). That is your link. The rest is not yours to manage.

  26. 26. Freedom from fear — atoning means undoing

    In plain words

A miracle is freedom from fear. ‘Atoning’ here means undoing, not paying. The undoing of fear is what gives a miracle its Atonement-value.

    Deeper meaning

This is the Course’s dictionary against the old religion. Atonement is not a payment to an angry God. It is undoing — of fear, of the belief in separation. A miracle’s worth is not how dramatic it looked. It is how much fear got undone. If after a ‘miracle’ you are more special and more afraid of losing the gift, fear was not undone. If a quiet joining left you less afraid, that was the thing. Full map: the Atonement page.

  27. 27. A blessing from God through me to you

    In plain words

Jesus speaks here: a miracle is God blessing everyone, through him, to all. If you have been forgiven, your privilege is to forgive. That is the whole job.

    Deeper meaning

‘Through me’ is not a personality cult. In this book Jesus is the one who finished the curriculum and remains in charge of the Atonement. The blessing is universal — not for a tribe. The privilege of the forgiven is not status. It is the right to extend the same release. If you collect being forgiven and will not forgive, you have refused the privilege, which means you have not actually accepted the gift (chapter 9).

  28. 28. Miracles are the means; revelation is the end

    In plain words

A miracle is how you get free of fear in time. Revelation is a state in which fear is already gone. Use the means. Do not demand the end as a trophy.

    Deeper meaning

Chapter 1 will distinguish these after the fifty. Revelation is knowing — direct, not a correction of perception. A miracle is a correction in time. You cannot make revelation happen. You can become willing to let a miracle undo fear. Demanding revelation (visions, union on command) is how seekers get unwell. Ra: do not demand the gateway. Polarize in the heart first. Indigo opens as a result, not as a forced opening. The workbook is miracle-training. Revelation, if it comes, is God’s last step.

  29. 29. They praise God by honoring you

    In plain words

A miracle praises God by treating God’s creation as perfect — you, them. It heals by saying you are not a body-self. You are spirit.

    Deeper meaning

Praise is not flattery. It is accurate seeing. Honoring creation means you refuse the story that someone (including you) became worthless. Body-identification is the story. Spirit-identification is the correction. This is 17, 20, and 29 as one motion. You can still wash the body, rest it, take it to a doctor. You stop asking it who you are. That stop is praise.

  30. 30. They show you the spirit in you

    In plain words

By recognizing spirit, a miracle adjusts how you see and shows you that the perfect spirit is in you. It raises that awareness in you — and can in others.

    Deeper meaning

You have been looking for spirit as an experience to import. This principle says it is already in you, perfect, waiting to be recognized. The miracle does not install it. It shows it. ‘Raise the spirit’ is not a séance. It is bringing what you are into awareness so it can be lived. When you see it in you, you can see it in them. That is 18 again.

  31. 31. Gratitude, not awe

    In plain words

A miracle should make you thankful, not stunned as if you were a worm visited by a god. Thank God for what you actually are. Holiness can be hidden. It cannot be lost.

    Deeper meaning

Awe that makes you small is still the ego: God is huge, I am dirt, maybe I will be permitted a crumb. Gratitude is the correct size: you are God’s child, the miracle honors that, say thank you and live. Hidden is not destroyed. Lesson 93, 94, 110: you are as God created you. If a miracle left you groveling, you took it as a spectacle (10) instead of as a reminder of identity.

  32. 32. Intercessions — they make perception holy

    In plain words

Jesus: he inspires the miracles. They intercede for your holiness. They put you beyond the laws of flesh-as-fate, into an order in which you are already perfect.

    Deeper meaning

Intercession here is not a priest standing between you and God. It is a correction standing between you and your misperception. ‘Physical laws’ in this principle are the ego’s laws: scarcity, revenge, death as identity. A miracle does not break physics as science studies it. It breaks the law that says those things get to tell you what you are. Celestial order is the Divine Order — what is true in God. You are perfect there. The miracle lets perception agree, for a moment.

  33. 33. They honor you because you are lovable

    In plain words

A miracle is not a patch on a wretch. It sees the light in you, dispels the nightmare about yourself, and restores sanity. You are lovable. That is the premise, not the prize.

    Deeper meaning

The ego’s order is: become lovable, then maybe love will arrive. The miracle’s order is: you are lovable, so the nightmare can go. Errors are not paid for; you are freed from them. Sanity in this book is recognizing what you are. Insanity is loyalty to the private self. Atonement as undoing (26) is this principle as an action on self-hatred. If your spirituality still needs you to be a worm first, you have not let 33 in.

  34. 34. They restore the mind to fullness

    In plain words

A miracle fills the sense of lack. That fullness is protection — not a wall, a mind with no hole for fear to enter. Spirit’s strength does not leave a gap.

    Deeper meaning

Lack is the perceptual content of the ego (41). You walk around as a hole that needs filling: people, money, status, even spiritual states. A miracle atones for that perception — undoes it — and the mind is full because it is as God created it. Protection is that fullness, not armor (Lesson 135: if I defend myself I am attacked). Intrusion is fear finding a gap you agreed to. Close the gap by remembering you are not empty.

  35. 35. Love expressed — effects may be invisible

    In plain words

A miracle is love expressed. You may not see a result in form. That does not mean it failed. Do not make observable effects the test.

    Deeper meaning

This rescues you from principle 2 and 10. The ego will say: if the fever did not break, if they did not apologize, it was not a miracle. The Course says the expression of love is the miracle whether form moves or not. Form is delayed and optional. Keep ordinary care. Do not use a unchanged symptom as proof that love did not happen. Ra: catalyst used in the heart is the harvest metric, not a parking space.

  36. 36. Right thinking — perception aligned with truth

    In plain words

A miracle is an example of thinking correctly: your seeing lined up with what God created, not with what the ego made.

    Deeper meaning

Right thinking is not positive thinking and not affirmation as a product. It is perception brought into line with creation — you as God created you, them as God created them. False thinking is any thought that says otherwise. Principle 37 will say a miracle is a correction introduced into false thinking. 36 is the result: alignment. The workbook is a year of that alignment as a drill.

  37. 37. A correction introduced into false thinking

    In plain words

Jesus: a miracle is a correction he introduces into wrong thought. It breaks up the false picture and rearranges it. Then you are under the Atonement, and perception can heal. Until then, knowledge is impossible.

    Deeper meaning

You cannot think your way into knowledge while perception is still a weapon. A miracle is the catalyst (the Course uses that word) that breaks the false picture. ‘I’ here is Jesus as the one who holds the plan. The Holy Spirit is the mechanism (38). You become willing; the correction is introduced; perception heals; knowledge — direct knowing — becomes possible later. Do not skip to knowledge as a shortcut. That is principle 28 again: means, then end.

  38. 38. The Holy Spirit is the mechanism

    In plain words

The Holy Spirit is how miracles work. He sees both what God created and what you invented. He can tell them apart because he perceives wholly, not in pieces that serve a case.

    Deeper meaning

Selective perception is the ego: it sees only the evidence for the grievance. Total perception is the Holy Spirit: the whole person, the whole situation, including what they are in God. That is how true is separated from false without a courtroom. You do not perform the mechanism. You ask, and you stop defending the false. The Voice is the remaining communication link (chapter 5). Stillness. Then the next kind step.

  39. 39. Error is seen as false — so it dissolves

    In plain words

A miracle dissolves error by recognizing it as not real. That is the same as: when you see light, darkness is gone. You do not fight darkness. You see.

    Deeper meaning

The ego wants you to wrestle error as if it were a real enemy. That wrestling makes it realer. The Holy Spirit identifies error as false. Light does not argue with dark. This is why forgiveness is not a fight with the person. You look from a mind that knows what they are, and the false picture has nothing to stand on. Lesson 23: you can escape by giving up attack thoughts. Same dissolve.

  40. 40. Everyone wears the mark of God

    In plain words

A miracle is a way of seeing the family resemblance — everyone as your brother, and his. The universal mark is what God created, not what they did last week.

    Deeper meaning

Brother, in this book, is not male and not churchy. It is the created, next to you. The mark of God is identity, not a stamp you earn. A miracle is perceiving that mark when the ego is busy perceiving a stain. Lesson 161: give me your blessing, holy Son of God. Hard. Exact. If you can see the mark only on the people you like, you have made it special (chapter 24).

  41. 41. Wholeness is what they see

    In plain words

The content of a miracle’s seeing is wholeness. That is how they correct the false seeing of lack. You were never a hole. They were never a hole.

    Deeper meaning

Lack is the perceptual lie: I am incomplete, you must complete me, or I must complete you, or God must be bargained with. Wholeness is the perceptual content of miracles — not a feeling of plenty in the bank. Special relationship (chapter 15) is lack trying to solve lack with a person. A miracle looks and does not see a hole. That looking is the correction of lack. You may still need a meal. Need of the body is not the metaphysical claim ‘I am not whole.’ Keep them distinct.

  42. 42. They release you from isolation and lack

    In plain words

A major gift of miracles is strength to leave the false sense that you are alone, deprived, and not enough. Isolation was a belief. It felt like a fact.

    Deeper meaning

The private self is lonely by definition: it left the whole. Deprivation is how it explains that loneliness. A miracle ends the sense, not always the circumstance. You can be companioned in God in an empty room. You can be isolated in a crowd if you are prosecuting everyone. This principle is why joining — even one dropped grievance — is already the opposite of the ego’s cosmology. Lesson 41: God goes with you wherever you go.

  43. 43. They arise from a ready mind

    In plain words

Miracles come from a state of miracle-readiness — a mind willing to join. You do not squeeze one out of a mind that still wants the war.

    Deeper meaning

Readiness is not a mood of being spiritual. It is the little willingness (chapter 18). You can be tired, scared, and ready, if you are willing. You can be glowing, impressive, and unready, if you still want a grievance. The state of mind is the cause; the miracle is the expression (3, 35). Train the state (workbook). Do not hunt the expression.

  44. 44. Inner awareness of Christ, and the Atonement accepted

    In plain words

A miracle expresses two things: you know the true Self (Christ) is in you, and you have said yes to the correction. Not a theology exam. A willingness.

    Deeper meaning

Christ, here, is the Self we share — not Jesus’s private last name. Inner awareness is recognizing that Self. Acceptance of His Atonement is letting the correction in (chapter 9). The miracle is those two, expressed toward someone. If you have the vocabulary and not the yes, you have a pose. If you have a quiet yes and clumsy words, you have the thing.

  45. 45. A miracle is never lost

    In plain words

It may reach people you will never meet, and change situations you will never hear about. You do not need to see the whole chain. Offer it.

    Deeper meaning

The ego wants credit and tracking. This principle frees you from both. Lesson 137: when I am healed I am not healed alone. The circle of Atonement (chapter 14) is this fact as a picture. Minds join whether you consent to the metaphysics or not. A dropped grievance in an ordinary hour is already traveling. Do not announce it. Do not wait to see who got it. Give it.

  46. 46. Temporary devices — revelation is the original language

    In plain words

The Holy Spirit is the highest go-between. Miracles are temporary communication, for while you still think you are here. When you communicate with God directly again, you will not need them.

    Deeper meaning

Do not make a career of miracle-work as if it were the goal. It is a device for a mind in time. Revelation is the original form of communication — knowing, not correcting perception. Principle 28 said miracles are means, revelation the end. 46 says the means expire. That is good news. You are not meant to be a professional undoer forever. You are meant to remember you never left. Until then, use the device. The workbook is the device, daily.

  47. 47. They lessen the need for time

    In plain words

A miracle is a learning device that shortens the curriculum. It makes a gap in ordinary time — an interval not under the usual laws. In that sense it is timeless.

    Deeper meaning

Learning through pain is slow. Learning through a change of mind is fast. That is the ‘out-of-pattern time interval’: the holy instant (chapter 15) in which the past is not used. You do not clock it. You offer it. Time continues for the body. The need for time as a weapon lessens. When the learning is done, time is done (15). You are not behind. One true instant is already out of the pattern.

  48. 48. Your only present means of using time well

    In plain words

A miracle is the only device you have right now for not being ruled by time. Only revelation is beyond time entirely. Until then, this is the tool in your hand.

    Deeper meaning

You cannot make revelation. You can let a miracle use this hour. That is control of time in the only sense this book allows — not stopping clocks, not predicting, not ‘manifesting faster.’ It is refusing to let the ego’s timeline (guilt, defense, fear) run the interval. Lesson 193: all things are lessons God would have me learn. Learn them as miracles and you need fewer repeats.

  49. 49. No degrees of misperception

    In plain words

A miracle does not sort errors into mild and mortal. It corrects perception regardless of how big the mistake looked or which way it pointed. That is its true fairness.

    Deeper meaning

Principle 1 said no order of difficulty. 49 says no order of dirtiness either. Direction of error — toward you, toward them, toward God — does not change the device. Indiscriminate, here, is the same word as the early workbook: do not pick spiritual subjects. A miracle that only works on nice problems is not this miracle. The small irritation and the betrayal remain one mechanism. Your special ranking was the remaining order of difficulty.

  50. 50. They compare what you made with creation

    In plain words

A miracle holds what you invented next to what God created. What matches creation, it keeps as true. What does not match, it lets go as false. That is the whole sorting.

    Deeper meaning

This is the fifty’s last picture, and it is the Last Judgment as chapter 3 will mean it: mercy that keeps the true and releases the false. You made a private world. Creation is what God willed. The miracle is the comparison, done without cruelty. You do not have to destroy the false. You recognize it is out of accord, and it has no standing. The Text after this is how a mind lives that sorting until it is the only seeing left. The workbook is 365 days of the comparison, applied to a real situation. Begin. Then begin again.
