Meaning
Students fear this card and so never learn it. Matrix of the Spirit is the spirit-complex as unused potential — dark because the veil hides the One, chained because a mind that does not know it is free will sit in a cave and call the cave reality. The figure is often goatish, sexual, earthly: spirit has not left the density; it is waiting inside it. Service-to-self reads this as a god of control. Service-to-others reads it as the honest dark of not-yet. You cannot skip to the Star by refusing this cave.
What the picture is doing
A horned figure, two chained humans who can leave (the chains are loose). The joke of the card is that the bondage is believed. The Matrix is the belief, unused by light.

In a life
The night you are sure you are only a body. Depression as unlit spirit, not as a moral verdict. Addiction as a lamp that will not be struck. Also: material life as a prison when it is actually a classroom. The Devil is the unused spirit in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday.
Service-to-others
Admit the dark without worshipping it. “I do not know” as the empty lamp. Then wait for the Tower — do not fake light.
Service-to-self
Make the dark a throne. Other people as goats. Bondage as a system. The elite cave.
How to sit
Sit in a dim room and do not improve it for five minutes. Notice the panic to turn something on. That panic is this Matrix itching for a Potentiator.
