Egyptian deck · The Magician
The conscious mind, unfed. Will that has not yet been reached by the deep mind. Tools on a table, unused. This is not a wizard. This is a room with the lights on and no one working yet.

Meaning
Matrix means that which is acted upon. For the mind, that is the conscious self you take to be “me” — attention, will, the speaker of I. Before the High Priestess reaches it, it is potential: clever, empty, able. People mistake this card for power. Ra’s use is almost the opposite: the Magician is waiting. Magical personality is later. Here there is only a mind that could work if something deeper touched it. If you identify with being the Magician as a status, you have already filled the Matrix with personal/one-to-one (orange), and nothing can enter.
What the picture is doing
A figure at a table of unused implements — will, cup, blade, stone — one hand toward heaven, one toward earth, or simply standing. The point is the unused. Not the performance. Sit until the pose bores you. What remains is Matrix.
What Ra asked to keep
In plain words
Keep
- The unfed conscious mind — no resource but consciousness (91.33).
- Sphere of spiritual nature of the will, held by thumb, index, and second finger (91.19, 96.15).
- Hand reaching toward what is locked from it until potentiated — not reaching inward (91.20).
- Square = third-density illusion (91.21). Checkering = polarity (91.23, 91.29).
- Folded wing of the bird: spirit cannot fly until released into conscious manifestation (91.24).
Release
- Star in the upper corner — astrological, not Ra (91.25, 96.15).
- Wand in the hand — astrological derivative of the magical gesture (91.19, 96.15).
- Cup, sword, and coin as strict objects — keep the meanings (polarity, struggle, work in the world), release the props (91.28–32).
In a life
Morning, before the phone. A blank hour. A skill you have and have not offered. The man who owns tools and has not built. The woman who knows the lesson title and has not used it on a face. The Magician is that unused morning. Start there, not at the Tower.
Service-to-others
Will held open so the unconscious can feed it. Attention as service: I am here, unused, available. The Course’s little willingness is this card without dressing it up.
Service-to-self
Will as a closed shop. “I already know.” The Magician who will not be potentiated becomes a performer of control. Specialness starts here more often than at the Devil.
How to sit
Five quiet minutes looking at unusedness in your own mind. Do not fill it. Notice the itch to fill it. That itch is the first teaching. Then one offered attention to a real person.
Speak this hour with this picture: tarot sitting.
Unused will, the priest-mind, and the step: notes for the adept.
Course
Lesson 1–3: meaning is not in things; the mind is blank enough to be taught. Little willingness. The Magician who already has a metaphysics is unteachable.

Stop being impressive. An empty morning, unused, is a more honest Magician than a feed of symbols.

She sat down unused, daily, and let something reach her. That is Matrix work. The contact was not a personality. It was an emptiness kept clean.

This pair · empty mind + the deep mind that can feed it
Is my mind unused enough to be taught, or am I already giving the lecture?
Lay the Magician, then the Priestess. He is a lit room with nobody working. She is the one who can work him. If he is already giving a lecture, she has no door. Get quiet. That is the whole pair.
Full pair answerSame job, three rooms · Matrix
Empty is the job. Magician: a mind with the lights on and nobody working yet. Justice: a body that has slept and has not yet been asked to lift. Devil: spirit in the dark before a strike of light. Empty is not broken. Empty is how anything can enter.
