The Forgiveness of Illusions

Original study notes. The book remains the book.

In plain words

True forgiveness does not say they sinned and you are noble. It refuses to join them in the dream of sin. True empathy does not dive into their pain and drown. It remembers who they are while they hurt.

Walk the sections in order. Open ordinary words when a paragraph is heavy. The book remains the book.

Walk through this chapter

Chapter 16. Each section of this chapter, in order. Ordinary words under a paragraph are the same teaching, said simply. The Text is the map. The day’s workbook lesson is still the walk. Official Text: acim.org.

Forgiveness of illusions

True forgiveness does not say they sinned and you are noble. It refuses to join them in the dream of sin. You remember the event. You drop the claim that it created a different kind of being.

Pardon that needs a real crime is still the ego’s ranking. Real forgiveness has no one to look down on.

True empathy versus false

False empathy says: your pain is the truth of you; I will join you there. It feels kind and it locks both of you in. True empathy looks, cares, and does not agree that the pain is their identity.

Comfort that forgets who they are is a subtle joining in distortion. Stay. Care. Remember.

The wish to be the exception

Specialness is more hurt, more holy, more important. Forgiveness of illusions is the refusal to make the illusion real in order to pardon it.

The whole workbook is this chapter applied to an ordinary Tuesday.

How to sit this chapter

When you want to dive into someone’s storm and drown with them, that is the bell. Look. Help if help is asked. Do not agree that the storm is their name.

You can hold a hand without taking the identity.

Two uses of a bond

Special

Complete me

A bargain. I will love you if you make me feel like I exist. Fear in nicer clothes.

Holy

Remember with me

The same bond, used for truth instead of need. Two minds that will not use each other.

Chapter 15–17. Same people. A different goal. Holy is a use, not a feeling.

Words in this chapter

Forgiveness

Not: “You did it, and I am noble enough to let it go.” Course forgiveness looks at the scene, sees that nothing real was threatened, and drops the claim that this person (or this body, or God) created a different kind of being. You remember the event. You refuse to let it author the future. That is not denial.

Specialness

The ego’s home: a little self that must be preferred. Spiritual specialness is the same trap in nicer language. If a teaching makes you more separate from the person doing ordinary work beside you, it is not this course for that hour.

Grievance

A frozen miracle: love you refused to let move. It feels like identity, which is why it is addictive. Love holds no grievances not because it is nice, but because it does not believe the pose is the person. Lesson 78 is the hinge: let a miracle replace the grievance, including the ones you enjoy.

Spalding

Forgive the illusion, not the person-as-sinner. Tina's whole year of lessons is this chapter applied.

Ra

Empathy that joins in pain without offering the Creator's view is a subtle service-to-self fusion. True comfort remembers who they are.
