Text · Chapter 17

Forgiveness and the Holy Relationship

Original study notes. The book remains the book.

In plain words

A holy relationship is not a perfect couple. It is two people who agree to use the bond for truth instead of for need. The Holy Spirit takes that agreement as a classroom. Faith is staying with the goal when the old war returns.

Walk the sections in order. Open ordinary words when a paragraph is heavy. The book remains the book.

Walk through this chapter

Chapter 17. Each section of this chapter, in order. Ordinary words under a paragraph are the same teaching, said simply. The Text is the map. The day’s workbook lesson is still the walk. Official Text: acim.org.

The goal, not the mood

A holy relationship is not a perfect couple. It is two people who agree to use the bond for truth instead of for need. Set the goal. Then the Holy Spirit can work.

We will use this to remember what we are. That sentence is the whole chapter’s door.

The shift is often messy

The relationship was built to complete a lack. When the goal changes, the old structure shakes. That shaking is not proof you chose wrong. It is the classroom opening.

Faith here is not belief in a person. It is loyalty to the goal when they (and you) forget.

Faith as staying with the goal

The old war will return. Staying is not staying in harm. It is staying with truth as the purpose of the bond, or ending the bond without revenge if that is the honest kindness.

Holy is a use. Possession dressed as romance is the other path. Unsentimental.

Two as a classroom

A pair polarizing together is efficient catalyst if the heart stays open. This chapter is how the Text becomes a life with someone in it — not a solo technique.

The person in the room is the curriculum. The goal decides what the curriculum is for.

Two uses of a bond

Special

Complete me

A bargain. I will love you if you make me feel like I exist. Fear in nicer clothes.

Holy

Remember with me

The same bond, used for truth instead of need. Two minds that will not use each other.

Chapter 15–17. Same people. A different goal. Holy is a use, not a feeling.

Words in this chapter

Forgiveness

Not: “You did it, and I am noble enough to let it go.” Course forgiveness looks at the scene, sees that nothing real was threatened, and drops the claim that this person (or this body, or God) created a different kind of being. You remember the event. You refuse to let it author the future. That is not denial.

Grievance

A frozen miracle: love you refused to let move. It feels like identity, which is why it is addictive. Love holds no grievances not because it is nice, but because it does not believe the pose is the person. Lesson 78 is the hinge: let a miracle replace the grievance, including the ones you enjoy.

Holiness

Not piety and not cleanliness. Holiness is what you are because of your Source. “My holiness envelops everything I see” is not a claim that you became impressive. It is the refusal to see unholiness as anyone’s identity — including yours.

Holy relationship

The same pairing as a special relationship, given to the Holy Spirit. Romance is not required. Daily decision is. Two people (or a group) who will not complete a private self on each other. Ra’s social memory in seed. Text chapters 15–17.

Special relationship

A bond used to complete a private self — romance, family, alliance, even an enemy. A holy relationship is the same pairing given to the Holy Spirit: two minds that will not use each other. It is a decision, daily, not a soulmate myth.

Spalding

Tina is at her most practical here. Holy relationship is not a soulmate myth. It is two minds that will not use each other.

Ra

A mated pair polarizing together is one of the most efficient catalysts on Earth — if heart (green) stays open.
